Elody Samuelson of Consumers Energy will offer an update on PLMA Women in Demand Response Interest Group activities, including a summary of findings from a recent survey of PLMA members and upcoming events. Then, Robin Maslowski of Navigant will facilitate a group discussion about new approaches to DR that will begin with three five-minute DR Snapshot presentations from these industry thought leaders:

40% by 2030 – Using DR to Meet Hawaii's Renewable Goals

Nohea Hirahara with Hawaiian Electric will present an overview of DR-related initiatives underway to meet the states' goal of 40 percent renewable energy by 2030. The research is focused on using OpenADR at water facilities to perform load increase and load following capabilities during mid-day hours when PV output is extremely intermittent.

The Role of Customer Incentives in C&I DR Program Design

Maria Woodman with EnerNOC will share recent analysis which sought to identify how key variables of DR program design differ between programs and impact the customer incentives offered. This research looked at 42 utility C&I DR Program structures across 30 North American utilities. Maria works with utilities to develop new markets for EnerNOC's demand response and energy intelligence products.

Taking an Individualized Approach to Residential DR

Hannah Bascom with Nest will discuss "Rush Hour Rewards," Nest's individualized approach to DR, and how Nest works with utility partners to maximize residential demand response and increase customer satisfaction. The result is a new paradigm for residential DR: load reduction and customer engagement.

Elody Samuelson is a Program Manager for Consumers Energy in Jackson, Michigan for the energy efficiency pilots and smart energy program team, which includes the demand response portfolio. She has worked in the demand response arena for four years as a program manager on both the utility and implementation sides and has 20 years of experience in business management in multiple service industries from hospitality to healthcare to energy.

Robin Maslowski is an Associate Director with Navigant Consulting, Inc. Ms. Maslowski provides expertise in the areas of demand response and smart grid, including cost-benefit assessment, strategic planning, program evaluation, and potential assessment. Her recent work includes determining market potential and implementation strategies for demand response resources, developing business cases for smart grid deployment, building customized analytical modeling tools, and identifying key areas of opportunity for market growth, such as the integration of renewables using demand response and smart grid technologies.

Who Should Attend. Utility and regulatory staff as well as other energy industry trade allies and organizations seeking thought leadership and insight on innovative demand response methods to meet peak energy load needs, mitigate price, and manage variable generation.
