E Source Acquires Utilligent to Help Utilities Accelerate Their Transition to a Sustainable FutureE Source

Posted September 18, 2023

E Source has acquired Utilligent, a leading management consulting firm guiding clients—including the largest investor-owned and three of the top five municipal utilities in the US—to deliver energy safely to millions of customers.

“As the 10th company acquired since 2020, Utilligent represents an important step in our commitment to helping every utility do the hard work it takes to become the Sustainable Utility—one that is environmentally responsible, equitably delivers safe and reliable energy, and is financially stable,” says E Source CEO Dave Perotti. “The integration of Utilligent’s capabilities, talent, and expertise along with the value they bring to utilities aligns with the client focus E Source has in our engagements. Together, we are an even stronger partner and adviser as we help accelerate utilities’ transition to a sustainable future.”

Utilligent brings deep utility expertise and a data-driven approach that furthers E Source’s capabilities in areas such as smart infrastructure (advanced metering infrastructure [AMI], distributed energy resources [DERs], and transportation electrification) and customer engagement, while adding new areas of expertise, including strategy and data transformation, utility operations, program execution, business process optimization, and organizational change management.

Utilligent actualizes high-impact, high-visibility, and frequently high-risk technology transformation programs to achieve clients’ business goals and operational efficiency.

Accomplishments include:

  • Holding key leadership roles on two of the largest AMI efforts in North America, deploying over 14 million meters
  • Leading the largest pipeline integrity project in the US
  • Delivering a strategy and overall roadmap, then moving into program management and implementation on a customer omnichannel digital transformation, receiving the highest J.D. Power customer satisfaction score in four years and earning Best Utility Website
  • Recovering $50 million in direct revenue following a failed customer information system implementation by a previous system integrator to manage the client’s rapidly evolving customer, infrastructure, and business needs

National Grid Job Opportunity: Lead Economist, Gas Load ForecastingNational Grid

Posted September 15, 2023

Job Purpose
The Load Forecasting & Analytics team produces electric and gas forecasts for National Grid. As a Lead Data Scientist of Load Forecasting, you will develop long-term load forecasts at various geographic resolutions. You will integrate distributed resource forecasts (including solar PV, energy efficiency, demand response, EVs, and storage) for our US service territory. You will support internal stakeholders including Supply, Engineering, Regulatory, Strategy, Finance, and others. You will ensure the forecasts incorporate new distributed energy resources, technologies, and policies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop long-term Load Forecasts using econometric regression and time series analysis. Perform additional analysis relating to the forecast as necessary.
  • Ensure the forecasts properly account for distributed energy resources and new technologies and policies (e.g., energy efficiency, demand response, electrification of heat, etc.).
  • The position of Lead requires the ability to work independently with minimal guidance and communicate to both internal and external stakeholders to present and defend results. The ability to speak to both technical and non-technical persons to present projects is essential.
  • Update forecast processes and documentation to ensure they are efficient, reviewable, and reliable.

Elexity Awarded DOE Grant to Revolutionize Battery Software for Commercial BuildingsElexity

Posted September 13, 2023

BEND, Ore., Sept. 12, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Elexity (www.elexity.io), a pioneer in virtual power plant software for commercial buildings, has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to integrate energy storage with Elexity’s advanced load control and solar optimization software, creating a whole-building solution.

Elexity will begin testing and development at the CPS America Innovation Center near Dallas, Texas, where the companies will demonstrate how storage combined with intelligent load control technology can deliver an array of advantages, including:

Enhanced Backup Power: Through coordinated load control and dynamic back-up ratings, building owners can rely on these advanced batteries for extended backup power during outages, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Avoided Electrical Upgrades for EVs: Dynamic whole-building load management allows building owners to reduce the time and cost to install EV charging by up to 50 percent.

Increased Grid Revenue: Intelligent coordination can double a building’s participation in utility load flexibility programs, such as demand response; utilities also benefit from greater predictability.

Double Savings: Users can double their demand charge or time of use (TOU) arbitrage bill savings by optimizing energy storage utilization in concert with building HVAC and EV charger load control.

Maximize Sustainability: Optimize when buildings draw energy to maximize the use of on- or off-site clean energy resources.

“Combining CPS’s turnkey energy storage hardware solutions with Elexity’s VPP software is an exciting opportunity to bring a unique solution to our mutual commercial customers,” said Bryan Wagner, GM of CPS America.

“Our unique load control-plus-storage solution for commercial buildings will drive compelling benefits for commercial customers and utilities. We believe this will accelerate adoption of storage in the U.S. market. CPS is a great partner to have in this effort with their strong track record, bankable technology and local team,” said Casey Miler, CEO of Elexity.

Elexity and CPS will be seeking pilot opportunities to deploy this next-generation system. Interested utilities, solar developers or commercial building owners should contact Elexity at www.elexity.io/pilot

Energy Flexibility: The Future of the US GridPiclo

Posted August 24, 2023

In this blog, Piclo’s US Policy and Regulatory Affairs Manager John Greene, discusses his key takeaways from the 2023 National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Summer Policy Summit, and what needs to be done to transform the US’s energy system to enable greater renewables integration.

The energy sector in the US is experiencing unprecedented change and growth, shaped by ambitious net zero goals set at the State level, the largest federal investment in climate and clean energy in history with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and new regulations like the FERC Order 2222 helping to usher in the grid of the future.

For utilities and customers, supply remains at the heart of the energy conversation regarding what that future looks like. More and more, we are seeing Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as solar PV, electric vehicles (EVs), and energy storage systems come online to offset our need for traditional centralized power generation and secure local home-grown energy.

Just last year, electric power generation from all types of renewables accounted for nearly one-quarter of total generation nationwide. As the US energy landscape continues to adapt, grid flexibility will be crucial to addressing the variable availability of renewable energy and enhancing the overall resilience of the grid.

An inflection point for grid flexibility

Last month, I attended the 2023 National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Summer Policy Summit in Austin, TX, which gathered utilities, thought leaders, and energy advocates from across the country to discuss how evolving our energy policy can help to strengthen the US’s energy system.

Representing Piclo at the NARUC conference, it was hard not to notice that I was not the only freshman at the party. From emerging energy businesses attending the event like EV charging companies, DER developers, and software providers, to larger established organizations entering the energy flexibility space such as Ford and Google, it was clear to see that the clean energy sector is booming.
