Appointments.  The Board voted to confirm the appointment of Paul Miles of PECO, an Exelon Company, to serve as Vice Chair to replace Derek Kirchner of DTE Energy.  Jeff Havranek of Sensus and Amy Bryan, of Jackson EMC have been appointed by the officers to replace Katie Panek of Westar Energy and Jane Peters of Research into Action. 

New Publications.  PLMA announced 3 new publications at the Board meeting: 

  • Joint Non-Wires Alternative Research Report – The report co-produced by PLMA and SEPA with funding from E4TheFuture details common attributes and lessons learned from 10 non-wires alternatives projects. Details at: www.peakload.org/nwa-joint-research.
  • 15th PLMA Awards Compendium – The publication includes transcripts from 2018 webcast interviews with the people behind six award-winning load management initiatives. Details at www.peakload.org/2018-winners.
  • Future of Distributed Energy Resources Compendium – A call for abstracts is now underway to identify leading industry initiatives where utilities are partnering with allies to demonstrate the path to a more integrated approach to distributed energy resources.  Details at www.peakload.org/future-of-der-call-for-abstracts 

38th Conference, Austin. Over 310 people attended the conference this week.  The presentation slides will be available at www.peakload.org/38th-Conf-Resources to all PLMA member organization staff, regardless of whether or not you registered to attend the event.

1. Register for 38th PLMA Conference on Nov. 12-14 in Austin. 2. Preview Introduction to Demand Response Fundamentals online course at www.enerdynamics.com/PLMA.  This new online training course developed by Enerdynamics with PLMA will be formally launched next week with a $79 retail price and a 20% discount for PLMA members on the entire Enerdynamics course catalog. This PLMA Education Planning Group activity is part of the PLMA Vision 2018 initiative.

Demand Response Training Series in Phoenix.  APS hosted 28 students for Program Design and Implementation followed by Market Fundamentals training at the headquarters office in Phoenix, October 8-12.  Training included lecture, mentored interactive exercises, and concluded with exams.  Volunteer mentors included Christine Riker, Energy Solutions; Michael Brown, NV Energy; Joe Childs, Eaton; Rich Philip, Duke Energy; and Dave Hyland, Zen Ecosystems.  Guest speakers were Lauren Carr, California ISO and Barry Ledford, CLEAResult. Trainers were Stuart Schare and Brett Feldman, Navigant; and Scott Coe, GridOptimize.

1. Call for Executive Committee Self-Nominations Ends Sept. 21. Self-nominations are now being accepted from PLMA Board members interested in running for Executive Committee, for the Fall 2018 - Fall 2020 term. If you plan to seek election, please complete the Executive Committee Nomination Form. The forms requests that you include a brief statement of your qualifications, your goals for the organization, and initiatives that you want to champion. Self-nominations will be accepted through Friday, September 21, 2018 from Board members listed at www.peakload.org/plma-leadership or a designate.  

2. Consider Who You Know That Needs DR Training in Phoenix on Oct 8-12. Seating is limited to 25 seats for PLMA's DR Markets Fundamentals 16-hour course which is immediately followed by the DR Program Design & Implementation 16-hour course. The training will be in APS' Phoenix office co-hosted by Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project, and Lauren Carr from California Independent System Operator will be a guest speaker. 2018 Demand Response Snapshot. The report published by SEPA in partnership with Navigant and PLMA is now available for free download at CLICK HERE.  PLMA is proud to collaborate on this year’s report, which offers a concise glimpse of the evolving demand response industry. We used our peer-to-peer network of practitioners to help increase the survey responses by over 50% to 155 utilities, and to enhance the peer review editorial process

38th PLMA Conference, Nov. 12-14, Austin. Over 145 people have registered for the Conference already, and our Hyatt guest room block is already sold out for Wednesday night, but they still have rooms for Sunday-Tuesday nights.  There is no longer an extra registation fee to participate in the Interest Group meetings on Monday. Call for Self-Nominations for PLMA Executive Committee Positions Ends Sept. 21

Self-nominations from PLMA Board members are now being accepted from PLMA Board members for Executive Committee members for Fall 2018 - Fall 2020 term. If you plan to seek election, please complete the Executive Committee Nomination Form. The forms requests that you include a brief statement of your qualifications, your goals for the organization, and initiatives that you want to champion. Self-nominations will be accepted through Tuesday, September 21, 2018. You must be signed in to access the form. PLMA seeks nominations from Board members for the Executive Committee. All current executive committee members (see roster at www.peakload.org/plma-leadership) terms expire at the conclusion of the 38th PLMA Conference in Austin. The PLMA Executive Committee is comprised of up to eight (8) members who are elected to a two-year term with no term limits from current Board members in good standing.

Job Description. PLMA looks to the Executive Committee to provide strategic leadership and vision to assist the Officers and Executive Director with tactical support in the operation of the Association consistent with the Board’s direction. Tasks include:

  • Review, Understand, and Comply with the duties and responsibilities of the Executive Committee as described in the PLMA By Laws, Article 6.

  • Understand, Comply with, and Assist in Enforcement of all PLMA Policies, paying special attention to the Executive Committee duties in the Fiscal Policy and Code of Conduct, which includes conflict of interest.

  • Actively Support the delivery of a Strategic Objective or other working group and participate in Strategic Planning.

  • Participate in monthly Executive Committee meetings to ensure quorum is met.

  • Participate in Conference Planning and Presentation Evaluation.

  • Review, Edit, and Discuss new or revised PLMA Policies. Be Present to vote to accept or reject policies.

  • Provide feedback on materials and reports submitted by Executive Director for review.

  • Two members of the Executive Committee are required to serve on the finance committee, as appointed by the PLMA Officers.

  • During the Officer Election year, actively participate in recruiting and ensuring that PLMA has a viable set of candidates for each Officer position.

  • Become involved in other PLMA activities as they arise

  • Proactively promote PLMA and especially its conferences and membership in PLMA.

The Executive Committee meets via conference call monthly and at other times as deemed necessary. Members must remain an employee of a PLMA member organization for the length of their term, and are expected to participate in a majority of the monthly calls and other in-person meetings. There is no compensation or travel reimbursement from PLMA. PLMA By Laws and internal policies and are posted on the Board of Directors Group Home Page at www.peakload.org/board-home-page - you must be signed in as a Board Member to access these documents.

Nomination Process. Any PLMA board member in good standing may self-nominate. If someone other than the board member from a PLMA member organization wishes to self-nominate, they must become the designed board member for their organization.

Election Process. The Executive Committee election will be conducted electronically before the Board meeting takes place on November 12, as well as on-site during the board meeting. Board members may choose to vote either electronically or in person at the Board Meeting. Votes submitted in person will over-ride electronic votes submitted by the same organization. Candidates will be invited to record a brief statement for a Meet the Candidates webcast to be produced for Board members in October.
