Title of position: Manager, Demand Response Research

Department: Research

Reports to: Practice Director

Overall description: E Source serves as a high-value filter of the torrent of information on developments in the energy services marketplace, sorting through the hype and providing its members with concise strategic insights and in-depth analyses. The Demand Response Research Manager is expected to provide engaging, high-quality research content on utility DR and demand-side management (DSM) programs to E Source members, which consist of more than 100 electric and gas utilities across North America, and manage and mentor a small team of researchers to support their own product delivery. These member organizations depend on E Source for unbiased, independent analysis of DSM policies, programs, and technologies.

The DR Research Manager will gather research from primary and secondary sources and critically analyze the information to create products and services useful to E Source clients. The topics this position will research include, but are not limited to demand response regulatory policy, utility DR program best practices and lessons learned, cutting-edge DR program models and technologies, benchmarking program performance and how DR fits into DSM portfolios and utility operations. This position will be responsible for developing an industry presence for E Source on DSM, which includes developing and maintaining a network of DR experts and actively pursuing and participating in industry-related events and associations to promote E Source work.

The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of utility DR and energy efficiency or professional experience working in a relevant industry, have exceptional analytical and writing abilities, and be a self-starter who is eager to learn and resourceful by nature. In addition, this position should have proven experience in management.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Provide unbiased and clear answers to E Source members’ questions
  • Develop industry presence within the demand response field by cultivating relationships with utility members and subject matter experts, participating in industry association events, and promoting E Source work to support renewals and engage prospective clients
  • Think critically to determine best practices and lessons learned from numerous types of demand response programs
  • Research and write reports in formats ranging from short two-page documents to more in-depth benchmarking studies.
  • Mentor other internal staff on demand response programs, policies, and trends
  • Develop expertise in the DSM field that increases the effectiveness of our members’ operations, programs and customer relationships
  • Contribute to demand response product development and support outreach to existing and prospective clients
  • Manage a small team of researchers including ensuring they’re providing quality research and growing within their career paths

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in energy, environment, public policy, political science or related fields preferred. Graduate degree a plus
  • At least 3 years of relevant industry or professional experience
  • Demonstrated interest in research topics related to DR programs
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in standard business software
  • Public speaking experience
  • Management experience preferred
