Evolution of Demand Response: Fundamentals and Path Forward

This half-day course explains how today’s demand response initiatives are evolving to interact with an emerging future with distributed energy resources for peak load management and much more. The course content expands on a white paper at www.peakload.org/?page=DefiningEvolutionDR

Learning objectives will include:

• Articulate a common, descriptive language for describing the evolution of demand response as seen through the eyes of industry leaders

• Explain the current state of the fundamental market principles and technology enabling demand response initiatives today

• Compare and contrast how demand response programs perform relative to energy efficiency, thermal/battery storage, and renewable energy initiatives

• Showcase leading-edge demand response program case studies from traditional private, public and cooperatively-owned utilities as well as emerging retailer and customer-driven initiatives that demonstrate paths forward

• Introduce examples of portfolio design strategies and implementation tactics to address the challenges of a fading boundary between bulk power exchange and retail electricity usage

• Focus on regional challenges by applying lessons learned from more mature demand response initiatives in the Northeast, California, Hawaii, and elsewhere

• Detail free and low-cost resources to learn more about topics and initiatives discussed

Who Should Attend

The primary audience includes new and transitioning utility and regulatory staff as well as solution providers seeking to improve their knowledge of how transition/reposition/create customer programs to address demand response methods and emerging distributed energy resources to meet peak electricity demand, mitigate the impact of high energy prices, and manage variable generation. Continuing Education

These courses may qualify for AEE continuing education and may be accepted for other certifications as well.  Supporting documentation can be provided upon request for your particular submission.

Course Materials

Registrants will receive a link for downloading an electronic copies of the course presentation materials for reference purposes in advance. All registrants who successfully complete the course may request a PLMA Certificate of Completion.  

Registration is $125/person PLMA Members and for those attending the CEDMC Fall Conference as well as CEDMC member organization staff with appropriate code.  All others must pay $175.  50% discount for regulatory staff and PLMA academic member staff (click register to see details).
